5.1.1 Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies, including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning
Student assessment can be done using a variety of strategies both informal and formal. Informal assessment can be as simple as just verbal questioning to check for understanding, pre-tests or presentations whereas all formal assessments have standardised methods of administering the tests. The results of formal assessment allow teachers to see where students stand in comparison to one another. This can be done by way of exams and diagnostic tests.
Formative assessment is a way of monitoring student learning by checking for understanding. This type of assessment allows teachers to identify if the students have any problem areas or where a teacher can improve their practice so that students better understand whereas summative assessment is used to evaluate student learning.
Throughout my practicums in the Design & Technology classes and Industrial Technology classes, I was able to take part in both formal and informal means of assessment which were used for formative and summative purposes.
