Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching.
Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College took receipt of a new laser cutter while I was there on my practicum. I was fortunate enough to sit in on a full day of formal training which highlighted all the relevant safety issues to do with laser cutting. There was a big emphasis on material usage for the machine. Certain materials were flagged to staff that were deemed to be unsafe in a school environment.
The trainer checked that the school had provided adequate ventilation for the machine and had a fire extinguisher installed. They made sure that all staff understood the importance of teacher supervision whilst the machine is running and what to do if a fire were to start.
The materials for the machine are ethically sourced and as a school, after this training, strategies have been implemented to ensure safe and responsible use of the laser cutter.
Below is a photo of the laser cutter along with some examples of different laser cut materials.
